DEVELOP EXPERTISE - Manager Edition Activities

Below you will find group activities that align with the Toolkit process and resources. These activities are designed to enhance onboarding efforts. Feel free to adjust and adapt to meet the needs of your employees. Have fun!

KNOW YOUR POWER SKILLS

Power skills are the skills that help you excel and get ahead. Sometimes they are referred to as “soft skills” or “non-technical skills.” The AZRetailCareers Core Score assessment provides employees with the opportunity to test their knowledge and earn a readiness certificate for service sector jobs.

  • Go to AZRetailCareers.com.

  • Click the “Find My Skills” button. This will take you to your Core Score or if you didn’t take the assessment yet, you will see a link to take the assessment.

DEVELOP YOUR GROWTH EDGES

ASU and partners offer free retail skills training through the EDGE website. This site is free and provides certificates for each module completed.

If you have a Buddy System in place, EDGE learning modules might be useful ways for new employees to gain knowledge and new skills. If you don’t have a Buddy System and are interested in implementing one, here’s a useful article you can use as a reference.

LEARN A NEW POSITION

This action step helps first-time employees think about a position or job they would like to have in the future. The action step presents three ways to do this. Listed below are those strategies and links to resources for each.

Job Shadowing =
employees interested in a particular job learn about the job and required skills by observing (shadowing) employees who are in that position

How to Job Shadow
Job Rotation =
rotating employees through different positions to gain new skills experience and better understanding of business operations

Job Rotation Overview
Mentoring =
employees with more experience, knowledge, passes along what they have learned to a more junior employee through a formal or informal program

Why Mentorship is Important

If your company doesn’t have any formal programs, encourage first-time employees to conduct informational interviews as a way to explore future opportunities. Here is a resource to share with employees interested in information interviews. How to Benefit from Informational Interviews

LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY

The use of technology for business operations goes far beyond the tools employees are trained on during their onboarding. Advancing in any industry requires proficiency with technology. If you have any employees who are interested in leveling up their technical skills and knowledge, here are a few free courses on Coursera that provide the option for certification.

MANAGE DIFFICULT SITUATIONS

Even the most amazing employees find themselves in difficult situations and challenges. If you have employees who may need support in working through a challenge, there are resources that may help on the EDGE platform. The following modules offer self-paced learning for working through challenging situations with customers and coworkers.

  • Dealing with Difficult Situations

  • Troubleshooting and Having a Solutions Mindset

  • Working on A Team

  • Conflict Resolution
